Unfortunately not much information could be found regarding this artifact. The book 300 Years of Kitchen Collectibles (Franklin 479), describes several varieties of portable stoves and camp stoves. The basic features for all these stoves include some sort of heating source and either a small grill or a small pot that stably sits over the heating source, as in this case. The use of these stoves go back to the eighteenth century, although most listed in this reference date from the nineteenth to the early twentieth.
