The Stump Family Recipe Books comprise three separate volumes: a Stump family recipe book (n. d.); Katherine Stump's recipe book (n. d.); and a ledger, dated 1860, with Mrs. John Stump's recipes written from the back to the front of the volume. The Stumps were socially prominent and influential in 19th century Maryland. Mrs. John Stump was a daughter of George E. Mitchell (1781-1832), a physician and a member of the U. S. Congress from 1823 to 1827 and from 1829 to his death. Her daughter, Katherine Stump (1846-1936), was married to James M. Magraw, whose grandfather was instrumental in establishing the West Nottingham Academy, the oldest boarding school in America.
The three recipe books are contained in Series I: Stump Family Papers (1847-1860), of the historical society's Mitchell-Stump-Maxwell-Magraw Family Papers. Series V: Miscellaneous Correspondence (1835-1864) contains three groups of miscellaneous recipes without dates or attributions, some handwritten and some typewritten. One is a handwritten recipe for currant wine.
