This cookbook is inscribed Jane E. Hassler Philadelphia Pa. June 1857 on the front flyleaf, and is titled Jane E. Hassler's Receipt Book Philadelphia Pa. June 30th/57 on the first page. The book is written in a notebook of 128 pages, of which 30 are blank; many recipes are laid in at the end. Through page 48 (An Excellent English Plumb Pudding, Cup [?] Cake, Green Corn Pudding) the book appears to be in Jane Hassler's hand. The remainder of the book was written by at least three other individuals. Many of Jane Hassler's recipes hearken back to the early 19th century, while the recipes in other hands are mostly of the 1870s and 1880s.
