Description

In addition to recipes, this small ruled notebook of 160 pages, about one quarter of which is filled, contains an account of a trip to Great Britain in the 1850s and records of the births and ages of slaves. The book was created by Mrs. James Lindsay Coleman, a plantation mistress. She was a granddaughter of Major General John Twiggs (1750-1816), who served with distinction in the Revolutionary War, and a sister-in-law of Henrietta ("Hetty") Kennedy McEwan (1796-1881), famed for flying a hand-made Union flag from the roof of her home in Nashville, Tennessee, before the city was captured by Union forces in 1862.
