Description

This cookbook is written in a small ruled account book. Many pages that apparently originally contained accounts have been removed from the book, leaving approximately 172 pages, all of which are filled with recipes. An inscription includes a date of 1840, which suggests that the recipes were written sometime after that point. The recipes are relatively lengthy, detailed, and descriptive. They are written in a flowing hand with flourishes that may be that of Ann Maury (1803-1876), whose letters to Reuben Maury (1785-1869) are included in the same archive. Ann and Reuben Maury were first cousins and grandchildren of James Maury (1717-1769), a prominent Virginia Anglican cleric and educator who counted Thomas Jefferson among his pupils.
