Description

Written in a notebook purchased from a Philadelphia bookstore, this 46-page recipe book contains the name "Kate Van Syckel" and the date "1851 September." However, the recipes were written in various hands and at different times, from 1851 to 1946; about half of the recipes appear to date from before 1865. There are recipes for desserts, preserves, meat dishes, soups, and dressings, as well as for personal hygiene items (toothpaste and cologne). In addition, there are remedies for dyspepsia, rheumatism, and coughs, and various tips for household chores (such as canning, removing stains, and washing certain fabrics). Some of the recipes are attributed to contributors. Loose recipes and newspaper clippings have been removed from the volume.
