Description
Likely dating from the 1840s, this anonymous English recipe book is compiled in an alphabetical tab notebook bound in half burgundy leather over marbled paper boards. The 242-page notebook contains 164 culinary recipes and 21 medical and household recipes, as well as varying numbers of blank pages at the end of each letter section. Additional recipes are written on several inserted leaves. The culinary recipes include beef tea (page 11), calves head hash (page 23), buttered eggs (page 50), honey comb gingerbread (page 65), real Scotch marmalade (page 99), mince pies (page 124), Canterbury pudding (page 126), Lady Graham's pudding (page 135), Mulligatawny soup (page 154), and to make yeast (page 191). A number of recipes are attributed to various individuals, some of whom are credited for multiple recipes: Miss Blackstock (page 7), Miss Yates (page 8), Miss Carrie (page 9), Miss Theahstone (page 44), Miss Borndaile (page 50), Mrs. Horsfell (page 66), Mrs. Byron (page 83), Mrs. Gladwin (page 83), Miss Carson (page 99), Miss Seaforth (page 104), Mrs. J. Forster (page 153), and Mrs. Hind Leeds (page 179).
