Description
Spanning the years 1832 to 1868, this book of culinary, medical, and household recipes is written in black ink in two hands, probably at Devon, England. While jellies, cakes, puddings, and preserves comprise a majority of the culinary recipes, there are also recipes for orange and grape wines, several for ginger beer, and some for meat dishes, including two for meals to feed six people. Medical recipes (including one for insanity), formulas for cold cream, powders, and salves, and instructions for making bug poison, chalk, and cement are written starting from the back of the volume and reading to the center. Some recipes are dated and/or attributed to specific individuals, including Mrs. Bagnell, Mrs. Wethered, and Mrs. Blunt. Eleven leaves of recipes are laid in the volume. Also laid in is the calling card of Miss G. W. Thorold of Warkleigh, Devon, England, whose name appears on items in the volume. A watermark with the year 1828 appears throughout the volume.
