Description
This English recipe book was compiled by Mary Smith starting on March 22, 1845. It contains 43 culinary and household recipes, including a pillaw [pilaf] (page 1), gingerbread loaf (page 6), apples à la frangipane (page 8), Wellington fancy (page 11), cola pudding (page 13), milk punch (page 16), strawberry acid (page 23), and pickled pork (page 28). Several recipe titles contain attributions: Mrs. E. Loving’s hams (page 13), Mrs. Best’s lentil soup (page 19), Miss Clarke’s arrowroot pudding (page 20), Mrs. Warmeald’s buns (page 30), Mrs. Hayward’s pudding (page 30), and Mrs. Cuthbert’s American pudding with jelly (page 31). The lentil soup recipe from Mrs. Best recommends purchasing the lentils from Frederick Vallee’s Italian Warehouse, in Haymarket.
