Description
The library's collection of the papers of James Darrach includes three or more recipe books, which are dated 1863, 1883, and undated. An 1827 graduate of Yale, Darrach established an academy in Fishkill, New York, which he headed until 1855. He then became the Superintendent of the New York Hospital, a position he held until 1864. James Darrach married Helena White in 1830. The couple had nine children, only three of whom are known to have lived into adulthood. It is possible that one or more of the recipe books in the collection was compiled within the family of James and Helena Darrach's eldest daughter, Mary White Craig (1839-1907), as her papers comprise a significant part of the collection.
