Description
Martha Atalanta Lumpkin Compton (1827-1917) was the youngest daughter of Wilson Lumpkin (1783-1870), an Athens, Georgia, planter, attorney, and politician, who served three terms as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, two terms as governor of Georgia (1831-1835), and as U.S. senator from Georgia from 1837 to 1841. The city of Atlanta, Georgia, is named after Martha Compton; the city was previously named Marthasville, also in her honor. Martha remained single until 1878, when she married Thomas M. Compton (1821-1889).

The collection consists of nine scrapbooks kept by Martha Lumpkin Compton. The scrapbooks are mostly filled with pasted-in clippings, but some contain handwritten recipes, personal musings, comments on clipped material, and poetry and prose. Also part of the collection are four folders of loose material, including recipes.
