Description
This large (41 x 26 cm) volume was originally used as a checkbook for the Augusta, Georgia, branch of the Bank of the United States, possibly by the family of Colonel James Edward Calhoun. The volume was then repurposed as a scrapbook with eight folders containing loose recipes, papers about household products, and advice. Some of the pages are handwritten. Others are pasted with newspaper clippings, with handwritten notes written on opposite pages. The loose pages were detached from the scrapbook prior to its arrival at the Clements Library and apparently consolidated in a single folder. The folder includes a handwritten note, dated 1989, explaining the contents.

This book is part of the library's Manuscript Recipe Book Collection, 1793-1959. The catalog record contains a link to a useful finding aid.
