Description

Christian Lantz Fisher, an Amish farmer, was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, on August 12, 1829. He and his wife, Mary Mast, married on January 6, 1853, and had one son, Elias. Christian L. Fisher died on October 23, 1855.

This volume of approximately 42 pages contains labor records regarding the farm of Christian Lantz Fischer, in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, as well as recipes for foods, household supplies, and remedies. One page written in Pennsylvania Dutch is laid into the volume.

The farm records appear on the first 17 pages of the volume. They consist of daily records of farm work performed between January 1851 and August 1852, including making hay, harvesting corn, and cultivating fields. Each entry lists a worker's name (frequently C. Lantz), the amount of time (expressed as a fraction of a day), the type of work done, and the amount of pay owed (calculated at a rate of $1.00 per day).

The recipes appear on the final 25 pages of the volume. The culinary recipes recipes focus on cakes and other baked goods, but also include recipes for sauces, chow chow, wines, and other items. The practical recipes outline inks and dyes, medicines, and products called "Cattle Powder," "Blood Purifier," and "Mortification."
