This cookbook is written in a small sewn booklet (6 1/4 by 4 inches). It is collected with loose pages of a larger size. At least part of the book was written somewhat later than the date of 1840 assigned by the library, for the book includes a recipe for Clay Cake, which emerged in connection with the 1844 presidential contest between Henry Clay and James Polk.
The recipes in booklet include Omelette Souffle, Sponge Gingerbread, Apple Custard, and various puddings. There are also recipes for a number of cakes by such names as Jelly, Poor Man’s, Golden, Silver, Lady, Sponge, Kate Anne’s, and Clay.
The recipes written on the loose pages include: Rusk, Venetian Red, Miracles, Tomato Catsup, Jumbles, Sweet Potatoe Puddng, To make Potatoe Yeast, several cakes (Plum, Sponge, Measure or Spice, Pound, Plain Loaf, Bread Cake, Sugar, Chess, Tea), Light Ginger Bread, Floating Island, Indian Pickle, and Soden Pudin.
