Description

Written in an unusually tall bound book (15 by 6 1/4 inches), this 40-page cookbook was primarily kept by Jane Rebecca Eggleston Irving Masters (1805-1884), in Amelia County, Virginia. In addition to handwritten recipes, it contains several newspaper clippings, one held in place with a metal pin, another sewn into the page with black thread. It appears that many pages were torn or cut out from the end of the book.

The recipes include: Oil Mangoes, Tumarter Catsup, Green Sweet Meats, Green Pickles, To Make Bread, Green Tomato Sauce, To Dress Veal Head, To Pot or Stew Pidgeons, To Clean Louse, Rice Waffle, Velvet cakes, French Rools, Muffins, Crea Cakes, Batter bread, Corn Meal Bread, Dutch Roles, Flannel Cakes, Yeast, Naples Biscuit, Potatoe Pudding, Pudding Puffs, Irish Potatoe Pudding, Chese Cake, Jelly, Jumbles, Drop Biscuit, Tavern Biscuit, Sweet Wafles, Brandy Peaches, Lemon Cream, Coconut Pudding, Cookies, Ginger Cakes, Sweet Meat Pudding, Transparent pudding, Apple Custard, To Preserve Ripe Musk Melon, Beer, Cordial, Cherry Juice, Ginger Beer, Corning Beef, and Vinegar.
