Description

This collection consists of a 116-page recipe book compiled by Margaret Oothout Wagner (1811-1871) and 45 loose sheets of Wagner’s recipes. The collection comprises 265 culinary recipes and sixty-one recipes for remedies, household products, brewing and winemaking, and knitting. Some of the recipes in the book include dates ranging from 1823 to 1862. “Recipes I got in Philadelphia in 1871” are transcribed beginning on page 89. (Mrs. Wagner died on December 17, 1871.)

Two of the culinary recipes suggest that the author was a dedicated cake baker with a wry sense of humor: The Cake I Love and The Cake I Don't Love. (See image.) Other recipes include Artificial Lemonade, A Nice Soda Currant Cake, Boiled Croquets [croquettes], Boston Apple Cake, Mrs. Dunn's Bugles; Cream Candy good, Crulla [crullers], Flummery, A Very Nice Pudding most excellent, Puffert, Recipe to Make Rose Butter, Snow Balls, Snow Cream, Smoked Lamb or Sheep, Tomato Catsup, Turtle Bean Soup, Vanilla Cake, and Water Cookies.

This recipe book is one of two kept by Margaret Oothout Wagner in the libraries possession. See also Margaret Oothout Wagner Recipe Book and Collected Recipes.
