Description

Mary Weaver Goss lived from 1824 to 1907. Her 64-page recipe book, inscribed “Mary W. Goss Meridian, Apr. 1860,” contains 286 culinary recipes and 118 recipes for remedies, household products, and winemaking. One hundred and thirty-three of the recipes contain dates from 1857 to 1894, 265 of the recipes are credited, and about forty of the recipes contain comments. The recipes cite various New York locations, including Auburn, Saratoga Springs, Claremont, Weedsport, Meridian, Ithaca, Syracuse, Penfield, Elmira, LeRoy, and Rochester.

The recipes in the book include American Plum Pudding…not so rich as to make everyone sick, Brooklyn Gems, Cabbage Salad, Charlotte Russe Pudding, Chicken & Lettuce, Chocolate Caramel, Mother Goss' Cookies, Corning Beef, Crackers, Crullers, Dandy Jack, Delmonico Pudding, French Loaf, Graham Crackers, Grape Catsup, Green Tomato Catsup, Handsome Cake, Howel Mountain Cake,  Kiss Pudding, Meat Souffle, New Year's Cookies, Porcupine Cake-Eva, Puffs and Puffertt, Raspberry Vinegar, Rough & Ready Pudding, Soda Fried Cakes, Starch Minute Pudding, Steamer Flour Pudding, Tapioca & Apple, Water-Cure Cookies, Yankee Fruit Cake, and Yeast.
